Books by TPC Members
Wilfred John Cowin was TPC #008. Wilf was a founding member of the Toronto Postcard Club and one of its greatest ambassadors. Wilf served the Club on the Executive and on committees in each of his 30 years as a member. In his life, Wilf collected many things; coins, stamps, objects, but by far, postcards were his greatest passion. His presentations at Club meetings and to community groups were delivered with enthusiasm and a sense of wonder and delight, whatever the postcard topic was. His postcard collection of Port Hope and his home town of Cobourg, Ontario was extensive and many were probably unique. This collection is now housed at The Cobourg and District Historical Society Archives at C. Gordon King Centre, 200 Ontario Street, Cobourg. Wilf passed away on July 23, 2007 and is missed by his many family, friends, and fellow deltiologists.
Towns and Villages in Durham and Northumberland Counties: as recorded in Early Picture Postcards
by Wilf Cowin
Picture postcards provide an excellent means of recovering some of our early history. In addition to the picture they usually include a caption with specific information, if postally used a cancellation giving information on the date and in some cases writing on the back pertinent of the period. This is information that does not usually appear on photographs.
It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. If this is true a picture postcard with caption, cancellation and written notes is worth much more.
A separate page has been assigned to each town and village. Information is given on the location and dates of operation of the individual post office. The population for 1901 and 1911 was taken from the Canadian Census. The cancellation was given to indicate when the individual postcard was mailed. Postcards are shown in actual size in black and white. Many of the original postcards are real photographs.

Postcards from Lake of Bays
by Bruce MacLellan
‘Post Cards from Lake of Bays’ was published by TPC member Bruce MacLellan in 2007, telling the history of this Muskoka lake through his collection of post cards from 1900 to the late 1940s. It is in hard cover and has 160-pages of mostly colour images and includes all parts of the lake, local villages and old resorts. The first half of the twentieth century represented a transition from logging and farming to tourism and settlement in the area. The five decades also represented a golden era of post cards – fostered by a convergence of printing technology, transportation and travel. Bruce MacLellan is past-president of the Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation . This book is on sale at local shops and marinas and is intended to further interest in all forms of heritage preservation. Profits from the sale of this book are being donated to the Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation . Copies are also available by calling Bruce at (416) 969-2727 for $24.95 plus GST and mailing.
